Blue8791 Scholar: Elaiza L. Tabaquero

In 2016, we celebrated our 25th anniversary by raising funds for an endowment to pay for the tuition and fees of a Senior High School student for two years. In 2019, our first scholar graduated from ASHS and is now doing very well in the Loyola Schools. This year, our second scholar graduated, along with three other scholars, all of whom we provided with food allowances. All four of them have been accepted in the Loyola Schools with full scholarships, but where they will study is not yet final because—like most of their peers—they are still waiting for the UP results. What follows are their graduation photos, as well as the writeups we asked them to submit.=====Elaiza L. This feeling of fear of the unknown, combined with a tinge of curiosity about what’s going to be of me, was truly terrifying and overwhelming. And now, as I look back to my 2019 self—who only wanted to study, enjoy the last year in high school, and just get it over with without any goal aside from graduating—I can’t help but ask myself, “Where is that person now?”Truly, my journey in this school changed the way I perceive life, it changed the way I live, as I’m not the same person who only wanted to finish things just for the sake of finishing it and be done with it. I’m not the same person who only thinks for herself but also thinks and acts for others’ sake. My goal changed from just graduating to learning and graduating with a greater and more significant purpose. ASHS opened my eyes to different perspectives as I met a lot of people from different backgrounds, each with their unique stories. Programs like Tulong Dunong and CSIP gave me the chance to experience and interact with different people, which instilled in me the value of loving and serving people. It’s amazing to think that the once just-good version of myself became better. Studying in ASHS made me experience a lot of firsts and opportunities that in turn helped me grow as an individual and as a future servant-leader. With all of that, I can say now that the moment when I didn’t let myself be filled with anxiousness, and bravely entered the gate of Ateneo to apply for admission was the best decision I have made in my life so far. Now, as I move forward to the next stage of my life, I’ll make sure to bring the knowledge and values that my experiences in Ateneo taught me wherever I may go. I have new goals to fulfill, which are to help and serve those who need it the most, and I believe I can successfully achieve that if I take the path that both satisfies my passion and the needs of my family and the country. I can take either BS Health Sciences in Ateneo or BS Public Health in UP, but I’m leaning more toward Ateneo, since they offer an interdisciplinary course. And if ever I decide to study in LS, I’m planning to be part of the student organization or basically, the Sanggunian. I believe that can help me be a more well-rounded person.
